Oxidative Cleavage of 1,2-Diols: Introduction
Starting materials:
- 1,2-diols (glycols)
- strong oxidizing agents such as Periodic acid or lead tetraacetate
In the oxidative cleavage of 1,2-diols, the iodine (VII) initially present is reduced to iodine (V) or lead (IV) to lead (II) and the C-C bond is cleaved by oxidation of the alcohol groups. Two aldehyde or keto groups are obtained, depending on whether the OH groups in the glycol are primary or secondary.
