Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born in Como, Lombardy (present-day Italy), at a time when his family's standard of living had declined. Contrary to expectations, young Alessandro did not follow his ecclesiastical career.

As a young man, he did not prove to be a prodigy boy. He began to speak only at the age of four and his family was convinced that he had mental problems. However, at age seven, when his father died, he reached the level of insight for children his age. From then on Alessandro began to progress intellectually. At fourteen, he decided it would be physical.

Alessandro Volta was fascinated by the machines and equipment he knew. At this age, he was fascinated by the phenomena of electricity. In 1774, he was appointed professor of physics at Como High School and the following year he invented "eletrophorous", a charge-accumulating machine. Alessandro Volta then became known for his invention and result. In 1778 Alessandro was the first to separate methane.

In 1779, he received a teaching post at the University of Pavia, where he continued his research and work on electricity. He invented other devices involving static electricity and received the Royal Society Copley Medal, where he was named a member in 1791.

His main achievement was not static electricity but dynamic electricity, more precisely in relation to electric current.

In 1794, he decided to assemble a device that contained two different metals, without the contact of any kind of fabric. As a result of his work, he got the information that there was an electric current circulating between the two metals.

Deepening his research, in 1800 Alessandro Volta proved his thesis by building a device that produced a continuous flow of electricity. This device was named "electric battery", the first in history. This invention led Alessandro to recognition in the scientific world. It was called to France by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1801 to demonstrate his inventions. He received medals and decorations including the Legion Honor and in 1810 was senator of the Kingdom of Lombardy.

Throughout his life, Alessandro won honors and awards, regardless of the type of government reigning at the time in different countries. After Napoleon's fall and Austria dominating Italy, Volta was able to stay in evidence.

However, the greatest honor Alessandro Volta received was from his friends and fellow scientists when defining the unit of electromotive force. This unit is named Volt.
