Various additions

The reverse of the dehydrogenation, i.e. the addition of hydrogen to a double bond, is called hydrogenation, and this is also a redox reaction. During the hydrogenation, the hydrocarbon is reduced.

During hydration, water is added to a double bond. This is not a redox reaction.

The addition of bromine to a double bond is called bromination. Accordingly, an addition of chlorine is called chlorination and the addition of iodine is called iodination. During bromination, the hydrocarbon is oxidized because the more electronegative bromine is now bound to carbon.
