Alkynes: molecular orbital model
In molecular orbit theory (MO theory), atomic or hybrid orbitals (AOs) are combined to form molecular orbitals (MOs). the -Hybrid orbitals mix to form a bonding σ orbital and an anti-bonding σ * orbital. The four p atomic orbitals form two π and two π * molecular orbitals. The energetic order from lowest to highest MO is: σ <π (y) = π (z) <π (y) * = π (z) * <σ *. A total of six electrons are available to fill the molecular orbitals, i.e. only the binding MOs are filled.
