Processing of polymers

Polymers have become a widely used material because of their light weight, low cost to produce, hardness, and corrosion resistance. In addition, the reaction mixtures are real fluids. The viscosity therefore depends on the shear force, i.e. the type and speed of the stirrer.

Processing includes all operations that are necessary to manufacture a product from a plastic raw material. The plastics processing industry usually receives the polymer as granules. It crushes this, if necessary, mixes it with additives (light and heat stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, pigments, fillers), plasticizes, homogenizes, granulates, if necessary, and ultimately shapes the product. Polyurethane, for example, is an exception. As this can no longer be processed afterwards, it must be brought into its final shape during the reaction.
